Pros and Cons of Different Types of Dog Collars

A quick visit to online pet shops will reveal a wide array of choices in dog collars. With so many colors, materials, sizes, forms and shapes, it might be a challenge to get the best, especially if you’re buying for the first time. Thankfully, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to find a perfect collar for your dog.   In this article, we provide a summary of the properties of some of the various leather and nylon dog collars in the market in order to help you buy the best fit for your furry friend.

Flat Collars

Pros: Flat collars, also called buckle collars, are by far the most common type of dog collars in the market. They come with adjustable buckles similar to belt buckles, but do not tighten on the dog’s neck once fastened. However, it’s imperative that you buy the appropriate size for your dog – not so tight as to choke your pooch or too loose that they can easily slip out of it.

Cons: That being said, flat nylon dog collars are not ideal for playful dogs that enjoy rough play with others. They do not prevent your dog from pulling unless specific training tools are employed. That’s why these collars are not the most effective training tools in the market. Also, dogs that pull can easily choke themselves and not even realize it.

Martingale Collars or Limited-Slip Collars

Pros: Martingale collars are a simpler alternative to flat collars. They are made using two loops – one with rings at the end and another one running through the rings. The design is intended to provide more control over your dog without choking him by preventing him from backing out of the collar and escaping. That’s why they are useful for dogs with narrow heads like Greyhounds, Whippets, Saluki, or any breed that is adept at slipping out of their collar.

Cons: The major drawback that comes with these collars is that they are a potential choking hazard if used to tether your furry companion. They also can cause damage to the trachea if the dog pulls excessively over time.

Prong or Pinch Collars

Pros: These collars are made of interlocking steel links which can be expanded or shortened by adding or removing links.  Each of these links has blunt prongs that pinch your pup’s skin whenever the collar is tightened. That’s why the collar should be fitted appropriately. The fit must be snug to prevent the prongs from pinching your pup’s trachea. These collars are good for controlling aggressive dogs (larger dogs with hard-headed temperaments).

Cons: They can choke your dog if the collar is improperly used. They also cause pain and discomfort to your animal, which is never recommended. They should never be used on puppies or smaller dog breeds with more fragile bodies.

Breakaway Collars

Pros: Breakaway collars come with a safety buckle that releases when pressure is applied. The design is aimed to prevent your pup from getting entangled. This aspect makes breakaway collars ideal for your pup if he often plays with other dogs or items in the backyard, woods or fields.

Cons: Although they reduce the risk of your dog getting strangled or injured, they can damage a dog’s throat or trachea over time due to constant pressure from pulling.
