Prong or Pinch Collars

Pros: These collars are made of interlocking steel links which can be expanded or shortened by adding or removing links.  Each of these links has blunt prongs that pinch your pup’s skin whenever the collar is tightened. That’s why the collar should be fitted appropriately. The fit must be snug to prevent the prongs from pinching your pup’s trachea. These collars are good for controlling aggressive dogs (larger dogs with hard-headed temperaments).

Cons: They can choke your dog if the collar is improperly used. They also cause pain and discomfort to your animal, which is never recommended. They should never be used on puppies or smaller dog breeds with more fragile bodies.

Breakaway Collars

Pros: Breakaway collars come with a safety buckle that releases when pressure is applied. The design is aimed to prevent your pup from getting entangled. This aspect makes breakaway collars ideal for your pup if he often plays with other dogs or items in the backyard, woods or fields.

Cons: Although they reduce the risk of your dog getting strangled or injured, they can damage a dog’s throat or trachea over time due to constant pressure from pulling.
